XFX 6600GT 128Mb AGP 8x Video Card
I wanted to do something a little different this time. I had this 6600GT video card to review, but I knew there would be lots of sites out there with the same old hard facts and figures with benchmarks of games like UT2004 and Far Cry. I decided to go a different route. I wanted to bring to you a review of the card, including the specs and such, but also wanted to provide some useful information as far as how well it plays the most system demanding game to date, Half Life 2. You will find some benchmarks of other games here as well just for a reference. I was hoping to find that this card, which happens to be in the lower range as far as price, would be able to handle HL2 easily and for much less money than a 6800GT/Ultra or an ATI X800 XT both of which can cost from $400-$600 or more. Our 6600GT today goes for about $250, nearly half of what it's older siblings go for, and it is this reason I wanted to show you that anyone who has been considering upgrading their video card for HL2 will find this to be one hard deal to beat as far as price vs. performance.

AMD 3000+ 3200+ 90nm CPU Review
Today we have more than a couple of choices in 64bit computing. It's popularity is quickly becoming mainstream. AMD has recently released it's next generation of 64bit cpu's with the introduction of the Winchester core line built on the new 90nm fabrication process. These cpu's are now made to fit in a 939 pin socket versus the 754 pin socket of previous Athlon64 cpu's which were built on a 130nm process so you will have to replace the motherboard if you want to run these cpu's if you are coming from a socket 754 setup. Today we take a look at the 3000+ and 3200+ models, both socket 939.

Microsoft Windows XP Media Center 2005 Review
I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center 2005 to review. Media Center is Microsoft's answer to Tivo. It allows you to create your own Digital Video Recorder (DVR). You can do everything that Tivo allows you to do and more. In the following review I will show you some of the advantages of Media Center; along with the disadvantages (there are a few).

AMD is releasing two new CPUs, the Athlon 64 FX-55 and Athlon 64 4000+. Both of these chips are being released on the 939 socket platform. I'm not going to go into detail on the differences between the 939 and 754 socket platforms, if you are not aware of the difference please see Gravy's upcoming review on the 3000+ and 3200+ 90nm CPUs.

AMD's Weber predicts eight core Opterons - Added 12-09
The cheif technology officer of AMD spoke at a Lehman Brothers conference yesterday. Fred Weber said AMD had started working on 64-bit technology five years ago and that it had to extend previous X86 architecture. He claimed the most important benefit from 64-32 architecture was performance. Future Microsoft software will offer better security for such systems, Weber said. He said AMD had realised the importance of the server market and saw a trend towards mobility. AMD changed the focus of all of its efforts on the server and mobile sectors, rather than the desktop. Leadership in the server market would allow benefits to trickle down into the desktop market.

IBM sells PC division - Added 12-08
Big Blue confirmed it has sold its PC division to Lenovo - barring X86 servers - for $1.25 billion, while taking a 19 per cent share in the Chinese company formerly known as Legend. The move marks not only the end of IBM's long adventures in the PC business but a clear shift in the centre of gravity of the industry from the US to China. The $1.25 billion Lenovo will pay is a mixture of cash payments and shares, with Big Blue holding 18.8% of Lenovo's business. IBM will retain the right to provide services for PCs, while the head of its Personal Systems Group will become a top gun in Lenovo once the deal has been approved.

Intel to put 64 bits in desktops in 2005 - Added 12-08
Intel once said desktop buyers wouldn't really need 64-bit capabilities until toward the end of the decade, but the company will make such capabilities a feature across its desktop lines next year. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker disclosed at its analyst meeting in New York that it will include 64-bit functionality on its desktop chips starting in 2005, a schedule that roughly coincides with the release of a 64-bit version of Windows for desktops coming next year. The functionality will appear even in the budget Celeron line.
