Battlefield uses a kit system in which each kit is a group of weapons with advantages and disadvantages. The different kits are Assault, Anti-armor, Sniper and Engineer. There are now two variations within each kit. You will always have a knife that kills with one or two slashes and pistol. The NVA has somewhat larger and rustier knives, almost like a small sword.
Assault Class
The Assault kit for the US gives you grenades and the choice of either the M16 or the Mossberg 500 shot gun. The shotgun is completely useless, and therefore the pistol is a wiser alternative. Despite the shotgun only having six rounds, you have to be very close to your opponent to kill him with one shot. If you fail on your first shot you must wait the long and vulnerable reload period. The NVA has the choice of the AK-47 or the RPD. The RPD is the ideal choice as it gives you one hundred rounds to discharge on your foes. It is also incredibly accurate for heavy assault gun.
Anti-armor Class
The overpowered US Anti-armor kit gives one the M60 heavy assault rifle and a choice of the M72 LAW Rocket Launcher or the M79 Grenade Launcher. Despite being my favorite, multiplayer action only sees this kit used as others do not choose a different kit. The M60 is very effective in that it takes only three or four rounds can kill an NVA soldier at long range. The M79 Grenade Launcher is powerful but difficult to use due to its trajectory and long reload time. The M72 LAW Rocket Launcher reloads automatically reducing reload time and the rockets travel much farther and faster than the grenade launcher. Both require several hits to destroy a tank and are useless against helicopters. Even if you manage to score a hit on the large Mi 8 helicopter, you will frown in disappointment as you realize what minuscule damage it has done.
The NVA's anti-armor is not so unbalanced despite being powerful. You can select the RPG 7V, which is paired with the Type 57 rifle. The RPG 7V is very effective against tanks and has a scope to help with accuracy. Even thought the Type 57 rifle has only ten rounds, it is very accurate and fires as fast as you can pull the trigger. Headshots at long range are possible with this gun's realm of possibilities. Your other option is the SA-7, which fires heat seeking missiles. It is not effective against tanks but it is useful against air targets with its homing ability. The SA-7, unfortunately, is not paired with a rifle.
Sniper Class
Snipers have two commonly opposed options on the battlefield: accuracy and power or firing rate and ammo. As for accuracy and power, the US's M40 and the NVA's M91/30 are fundamentally one in the same. They each have five rounds and roughly the same reload time. Both are very powerful and accurate weapons. It is even possible to score headshots from hundreds of yards away. The US kit comes with smoke grenades. These spew a nasty looking green and yellow smoke with limited uses. The NVA on the other hand has a more interesting combo of caltrops, which are metal stars that are tossed onto the ground and damage all who step on them and can even cause jeeps to explode. It should only reduce the Jeep's hit points to half because all caltrops would do in reality is pop the tires. Thankfully they do not damage tanks.
The other option is firing rate and ammo. The US player is given an M16 with a scope and smoke grenades. For some reason, either one headshot is not lethal or the gun is inaccurate. At most distances, two headshots were required for a kill. This is not the only weapon to suffer from such a problem. For example, a pistol shot on the back of the head to a bot standing still ten feet away was not fatal, but you cannot expect to get a headshot on a real player during frantic pistol combat.

A bit disappointing as it is not equipped with a scope, but it is still good for sniping, and what this variation of the NVA sniper kit lacks in scopes, it makes up for with explosives. You have the Bouncing Betty AND the time bomb. What a deal! The Bouncing Betty is a trip mine, which explodes by vehicles and players crawling in prone. You hear a click, then the Bouncing Betty shoots up into the air and gives off a modest explosion. The time bomb on the other hand has an enormous explosion. Primary fire sets it to ten seconds before which seems like an eternity when you are waiting for your enemies to die. Secondary fire is the exact opposite. Unless you are throwing it from a moving vehicle or out a window, YOU WILL DIE. The bomb goes of in one second and the blast radius cannot be outrun. Even though you will die this way, there are times when you must take one for the team. Then again you just toss it around a corner and you'll be fine.
Engineer Class
Engineers cannot only repair vehicles, but they can set traps. Both US engineer kits have the M14, a rifle similar to the NVA's Type 56, and a wrench for repairing vehicles. The first variation on the US kit has mines and a mortar. The mortar can be deployed and then picked up to be placed again. It functions like a stationary vehicle. It is difficult to use because most of the time the shells land far beyond your visual range.
The other variation has a torch for dismantling vehicles and remotely detonated C4. The remotely detonated C4 is most exiting because it sticks to everything including tanks, helicopters, flagpoles, and whatever else you can think of. It requires patients to use because you have to wait for someone to walk into your trap.
The NVA kits both have the wrench and the MAT49, an inaccurate assault rifle. As an NVA engineer, you can wire vehicles to explode although it really is not necessary. The same effect can be achieved by placing a mine under the vehicle. It will go off immediately once the vehicle is started. Additionally, you can wire all the vehicles you want but then you must wait or use yourself as bait to make enemy players use them. Pungi-sticks are available on some maps. These sharpened wooden sticks that you place in the ground are pretty low making them difficult to spot and instantly killing anyone who walks on them. If you have the patience, you can set up an entire base with these sticks but keep in mind that vehicles will move over then unaffected.
