Closer Look

Unlike the Tri-fan model, this unit only has two fans, one at the rear and the other in the front of the unit. So the question needs to be asked, will not having the third fan make this unit run hotter? Although they both seemed to keep my case at the same temperature, the fans in this unit seemed to run faster and of course, louder. This unit also has the control knob on the back to control the fan speed and loudness of the fans. It can be made quiet when it needs to be and loud when playing extended sessions of your favorite games or overclocking sessions.

Again, like the other Aspire power supply, the connectors are UV reactive and really glow under UV lighting. There are the same amount of connectors as the 520 watt model, six four prong power supply connectors and two three prong connectors. The ATX power connector is supposed to be UV reactive, but just like the other unit, this one failed to glow under my UV lights. The wire ties that they use are UV reactive also. It would have been really cool if the inside of the clear case had UV reactive parts in it, but they are just multi-colored. This power supply also has the 12V connector for your P4 needs and AMD boards that now use this connector. One thing that i s missing from this power supply, like the other one we reviewed, is SATA hard Drive power connectors. It's not a big deal, but it would be really nice if makers would start building this feature into the power supplies.

The two fans in the power supply have blue LED's in them and are also UV reactive. They do a great job of lighting up the clear covering of this unit. The one in the front, of course, is going to draw hot air from the top of your tower towards the rear fan. Again, I did not notice any change in case temperature between the 520 and the 500 watt models.

Just like the 520 watt model the switch and power cord socket are UV reactive. This is cool if you can see the back of your tower, but I can't see the back of mine. The fan control knob on the unit is the same as the 520 watt model, nice and shiny, chrome plated. Again, if you look really close you can see my image in there when I snapped the picture.

I took this picture while the power supply was lying on my work table, hooked up to my power supply tester. The tester just hooks up to your ATX power cable, then you just plug the unit in and turn it on with the switch on the back of the power supply. If the power supply is working it should power up. I test all my power supplies before I use them, just to make sure they are set to the proper voltage and that they are working before installing them in my tower.

Here is a close up of the front and rear fans lit up. Seeing the insides are really neat because I have never been brave enough to take a cover off and check this stuff out. So did the clear cover leak out any electrical current? I did not experience any system instability at all, nothing crashed or locked up during the test of this power supply, or the other 520 watt model for that matter.

This is what the power supply looks like installed inside of the Aspire X-Dreamer II case we reviewed earlier. Again, this unit is a lot longer than the cheap stock unit that is installed in their cases. You get what you pay for; if you buy a cheap case you will get a cheap power supply. That is why you should buy a case that has no power supply in it, and then later, choose one like this one to install in your system. I can not stress enough how much a quality power supply will help to keep your system running smoothly and stable. The power supply is often one of the most overlooked components in your system.

Testing and Results

Once again, I used Motherboard Monitor to check the voltages during the testing of this power supply, just like the other model. Testing included running folding@home, Win Amp playing streaming audio and I was surfing the web at the same time. The system stayed at almost the same numbers 24 hours later, accomplishing all of these tasks without crashing. The numbers between the 500 watt and 520 watt models were almost exactly the same. The only one that seemed to change was the +12v line, but remember the Albatron KX18D Pro II motherboard that we reviewed earlier does not use the 12V connector. This power supply and the 520 watt model behaved exactly the same, which means that Aspire has done an excellent job on their manufacturing process.
