Asus A7M266-D Motherboard

Asus throws in its hat in the dual processor ring

By Micheal (Oreo) Falcon, 1/14/2002

Since the introduction of the first AMD Athlon based motherboard the K7M, Asus has continually pushed the envelope of innovative features and performance. As of late, Asus has been quietly working with AMD to release a dual processor platform based on AMD's new MPX design. Asus is known for their flair and pioneering approach in motherboard design. By flair, I mean giving the end user what they are looking for. Most Asus platforms allow for full configuration and adjustment of everything from FSB, core voltage, memory timings and multiplier. These platforms have been stable and yet have been able to produce amazing overclocking results when pushed to the edge and beyond of specification. Asus' line of motherboards has spanned every possible chipset configuration available for the AMD line of processors. There is only one thing missing from their arsenal of motherboards, a dual processor platform sporting AMD's newest XP MP line of processors.

Are you prepared for what the future holds for you? Come with us and witness the awakening of the sleeping giant, the A7M266-D:

Asus is taking advantage of the release of the new AMD 760MPX chipset to launch their version of a Dual AMD platform. Sporting the AMD 760MPX chipset will have several advantages. First off, this chipset is comprised of the same AMD 762 Northbridge chip used on the Tiger MP and Thunder K7 motherboards. The Southbridge is a different story. It is the all-new AMD 768 Southbridge chip.

Coupling the AMD 768 Southbridge with the proven AMD 762 Northbridge introduces some unique additions to the features list. For example, the addition of two 64bit/66mhz PCI slots the performance door to the world of servers and workstations. These 64bit/66mhz slots deliver up to four times more bandwidth than conventional 32-bit PCI slots and when coupled with a SCSI Raid controller such as the LSI 1650 will give the end user a theoretical throughput of 533 MB/s. There is now support for 4GB of PC2100 Registered DDR memory. The Asus A7M266-D also has the flexibility for supporting up to 2GB of PC2100 un-buffered DDR memory. The use of Registered DDR memory provides increased data integrity and reliability necessary for server applications, while un-buffered DDR memory delivers cost-effective performance adequate for most regular system applications. Another addition is the ability to offer integrated AC'97 Audio support. Something else that should make you smile is the fact that the A7M266-D platform uses a standard 300w+ power supply.

If you look at the above picture, you can see there are now three PSU connectors on the A7M266-D platform. The use of the 20-pin main power connector is normal. Asus has included two other common style connectors to supply extra voltage this platform needs. Depending on the style of connector your PSU supports, you can use either the square four pin or the flat six-pin connector to fulfill these additional power requirements. What does this mean? You can most likely use your current PSU to build your Dual AMD dream machine.

You might have noticed that there is something missing in the picture. Any idea what it is? Well there seems to be an incompatibility issue with the onboard USB and the AMD 768 Southbridge. This issue is hit or miss and to avoid causing possible problems Asus has removed the onboard USB 1.1 in favor of including a PCI USB ver 2.0 cards with the motherboard. If you think about it that is not a bad deal.

Something else you may or may not have noticed while looking at the full picture of the motherboard, that there is no game/midi port.

From reading through the AMD 760MPX Chipset Overview it appears that the 768 Southbridge does not support a game/midi port. This could be looked upon as a downside but honestly any gamer or multimedia enthusiast would be running a high-end sound card, which would include a game/midi port.

Another unique thing about the A7M266-D is that Asus has decided to strap a massive heatsink to the AMD 762 Northbridge.

This baby will definitely help keep the Northbridge cool. Wondering why Asus has used this large of a heatsink? Keep reading and all will be revealed.

Now that we have an idea of the additions, the AMD 760MPX chipset has brought to our A7M266-D platform lets look at the complete list of specifications listed by Asus.
