The Athlon 64 and the Athlon 64 FX product line will debut today in two forms. The first is the Athlon 64 3200+ and the next is the Athlon 64 FX-51. The Athlon 64 3200+ is running at a true clock speed of 2.0 GHz. The Athlon 64 FX-51 is running at 2.2GHz. Seeing a 200MHz disadvantage for the Athlon 64 3200+ one might think the Athlon 64 FX-51 will be the way to go, but this is not the case for many. As we go through the benchmarks you will see what the slower memory path for the FX will do to its performance.

Take a look at the following pictures to see the differences in the processors.

Athlon 64 3200+
Athlon 64 FX-51

The Desktop market will see the Athlon 64 3200+ and obviously higher speeds later being pushed their way. The motherboard manufacturers will integrate features and support for this chip just as we have seen with current motherboards on the market. In fact, or most users the only thing that is need to upgrade to the Athlon 64 3200+ is to purchase the Processor and Motherboard. Memory will run at DDR400 speeds which many users have moved to in that past year.

The move to the Athlon 64 FX-51 will not be as easy simply because of the use of PC 2700 ECC Registered Memory. With our ASUS SK8N with the nForce3 Pro chipset, you are required to run two sticks of memory. This can be an expensive upgrade, but for some it may be well worth it. Other than the memory, all other components and applications will work just fine.

Test Setup

For our test configurations we ran every setup with the highest possible settings. With the Athlon 64 FX-51, we are only able to set the memory to CAS 2.5 with our motherboard, but the Athlon 64 3200+ was able to be set to CAS 2.0 with the Gigabyte board. We think this is a good arrangement for the tests since all motherboards are running the nForce chipset. In the case of the Athlon 64 architecture, it is the nForce3. The nForce2 does the billing for the Athlon XP.

As we see more motherboards hitting the market, we will revisit our benchmarks here to give you an idea of how the Athlon 64 architecture will perform in the year to come with games such as Half-Life 2 and Aquamark v3. Both of these benchmarks were unavailable at the time of our testing, but we hope to have them for you the next go around.
