Features

The KD7 takes advantage of the new features in the VIA KT400 that were unavailable with the KT333 from VIA. There is now support for the new AGP 8x specification and support for the new Thoroughbred CPUs with a FSB running at 166MHz. In addition, USB 2.0 support is native to the KT400 chipset as well.

The four memory slots, mentioned earlier, allow up to 3.5 GB of RAM. To achieve 3.5 GB, Registered memory running at DDR266 speeds must fill the slots. Using Un-buffered DDR memory, 3 GB is the limit. DDR266 is the speed limit for un-buffered memory as well. The only means to achieve DDR400 and DDR333 speeds is to use only two of the memory slots for a 2 GB maximum.

The onboard sound setup with the KD7 utilizes a 6-channel AC 97' CODEC. Just one look at the back panel reveals six connections usually found only on add-in cards. The connections are for the microphone, line-in, front speakers, rear speakers, center/subwoofer, and an S/P DIF-Out.

An onboard Realtek RTL8100B 10/100M PCI Fast Ethernet Controller is included on the KD7. This has pretty much become standard issue on current motherboards anymore.

USB 2.0 support is a part of the KD7 also. With so many products supporting the faster bus speed of USB 2.0, it is a welcome sight for many power users. The KD7 is equipped with four USB ports. Two ports are built-in on the rear panel, and a supplied bracket has two additional ports. The bracket will plug into one connection on the motherboard leaving an addition connection vacant. This additional connection will allow you to connect the front USB ports on your case, providing your case has built in USB ports. It would be nice to see more USB ports considering other manufacturers have spoiled me by providing support for up to eight ports on their boards.

Abit also provides purchasers of the KD7 with the peace of mind that their CPU will most likely survive a fan failure or other such causes of CPU overheating. Utilizing Hardware Thermal Protection in the KD7 allows the user to breathe easier after spending that big money on the new Athlon XP2800+. The KD7 uses pure hardware detection, which unlike many others which use software detection to prevent CPU overheating.
