Test System and Configurations

The length of time in testing each of these cards has left us in a position of testing each video card with what may appear to be out of date drivers. To keep everything on a level playing field, we ran all benchmarks with the same drivers, even though they began to show a little age toward the end of our testing. The only exception to this is the ATI 9500 Pro. This more recent card from ATI came with a newer Catalyst driver than did our 9700 Pro.
So let us take a look at our test system, along with the benchmarks we will be running.

System Test Configurations
Processor(s): Athlon MP 1900+
Motherboard(s): Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW
RAM: 512 Megs Ventura Tech Registered Memory
Hard Drive(s): IBM 30GB 75GXP 7200rpm Hard Drive
Video Card(s): 15 Different Video Cards
Video Driver(s): NVIDIA Cards: Detonator 30.20
ATI Cards: Radeon 9500 Pro 6113 Driver
Operating System: Windows XP SP1 Home Edition

The system is running at factory defaults. None of the components are overclocked or tweaked out of specification. The only adjustment made was to disable V-Sync for each of the video card driver at installation. We have chosen the benchmarks in the chart below, as we believe they represent a good cross sampling of what the average gamer will face in today's gaming environments.

The Gauntlet - Benchmarks
3Dmark2001SE
Serious Sam - Valley of the Jaguar
DroneZ
AquaMark
Vulpine
Quake III - Demo 1
Code Creatures
UT 2003 Flyby
UT 2003 Botmatch

Each of these benchmarks was run at the following resolutions of 1024x768, 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 32-bit color. For FSAA testing, the benchmarks were run with 4x FSAA at 1024x768x32 and 1600x1200x32 for video cards with 128MB of memory. There are quite a few graphs to see and in several instances you will find some unexpected results. With that said let's take a look at what we found during our little adventure.

Looking at the results of the 3DMark2001SE benchmark, I do not think you see any real surprises. The 9700 Pro does really pack a punch as it out paces the field with style and grace. Much to our amazement the Radeon 9500 Pro out-scored both of the NVIDIA Ti4600 video cards. This was completely unexpected and we even reran the benchmark several times to make sure we were getting an accurate result.

As we look down the graph we can see several things. The Parhelia, with its DirectX 9 compliance, falls short of over half of the field. Also, you might have noticed the PowerColor 9000 result is zero. We were unable to get this card to complete the benchmark. Shortly after starting the 3DMark2001, the system would drop back to the desktop. We tried several drivers and the results were the same. It was decided that we would give the PowerColor card a free walk by placing it on the graphs where we felt it should have scored. After seeing these results, it is clear that if you are looking for bragging rights and huge numbers in the 3DMark2001SE score, the Radeon 9700 Pro is the card for you.

Winner:
Radeon 9700pro
Most Surprising Result:
Radeon 9500pro
Biggest Disappointment:
Toss up between PowerColor 9000 and Matrox Parhelia

The amazing graphics and color used in the game Serious Sam SE is absolutely eye popping. Serious Sam SE uses a state of the art engine that offers high polygon count multi-resolution meshes, real-time lens reflections, procedural textures, photo-realistic reflections, specularity, and bump mapping. The Valley of the Jaguar benchmark under Serious Sam SE is a great benchmark as it throws everything at you the game has to offer while including many visual effects such as lens flare, detailed textures, color, shadowing, and a screen full of non-stop opponents. We have run the benchmark at the common resolutions used by most gamers. As you can see with the 1024x768 results, it is a close race from the Geforce2 Ti450 to its more expensive competition.
