I have an external usb WD HD 120Gb that has failed, something about the Master File Table being corrupt. Problem of course is I need data off it. I have used BinaryBiz Virual Lab Client tgo scan and perform the diagnostic. So I can see the files, but they want $109 for the first gig to actually recover the files and then $5 for each gig after that. Read some reviews and they indicated it worked, but the terms of use were really sketchy.

Wondering if anyone has used a good data recovery program (preferrably free, but I am willing to pay a resonable amount). Thanks appreciate the help.

Last I read was if you put the hard drive into a sealed bag w/o humidity and throw it into the freezer, it'd give you enough time to snag that data off the drive for you to get all the important stuff.

Not mechanical failure

The problem isn't mechanical it is a corrupted Master File Table. Don't see how putting it in the freezer will help. I'm looking for good data recovery software.

Why not just hook it up as a extra hard drive on another computer and just copy the most important folders to that PC'S hard drive.

That's is what I am trying to do. There is no folder structure within the hardrive. All files on a drive are stored in a Master File table that tells the OS what files are on the drive. With a corrupted MFT the OS is not able to read from the drive, therefore can't recognize any files.

Imagine a dictionary out of alphabetical order with no Table of contents or index. You want to find and copy a word?? Same thing here.

Have you tried fdisk /mbr?
Found on Google, I have never used it myself.
