Do you think Parallel ATA will phase out? Do motherboard manufacturers have a set date of when they will stop making them in order to have SATA hard drives only?
If so, when will Samsung have only SATA supported HD's ?

I would also like to mention the other benefits of Serial ATA.
Hot-swappable
daisy chainable

Yeah I saw that. But I was wondering if eventually they would phase out parallel IDE entirely

Using our simple sea website templates on our site you can buy website templates I think it's not about what SATA can do NOW, but what SATA has the potential to do... I mean the bandwidth available through UDMA-100/133 will be more than ample for the time being but as the data transfer rates go higher and higher you will need a larger bandwidth... That is why everyone is looking towards SATA... Also with SATA you won't have the problem of data slowing down when you have multiple drives connected (ie. Master/Slave) because once again the available bandwidth... I hope this is a good enough explanation... I just woke up (Morning in Korea) and am still a little groggy... Heh...

Hi Chuck,
I have a question about Serial ATA drives. At first I thought that they would be faster that parallel IDE drives, but from what I read they're not really faster. What do you see as the main advantages to going to Serial ATA?? Any faster hardware coming up in the near future?
Thanks,
Joe

Serial ATA has a future
Today Serial ATA is just taking the ATA limit of 133 and moving to a new interface that has the ability to go faster.
In regards to taking over the high end (FC, SCSI, 10K) well, in 2004 that will be the next step for SATA.
www.serialata.org will answer many of these questions better

Is that either or? Or both available on the same drive?
How about an included/reasonable priced adaptor?
most of us buy parts, with the hope of future compatablity, to ease the cost of transition.

Is Samsung making/planning on making MicroDrives? The technology in those things is incredible. Only 5mm thick, and they come in sizes up to 1GB. A lot of my friends are buying them for their digital cameras.

Samsung SATA
SATA will be backwards compatible throught he use of a adapter... But as I stated it seems likely that Mptherboard manufacturers will be supporting both interfaces for at least a couple of years more... So there should not be too much to worry about there...

How are those Microdrives anyway? They sound a bit delicate for a user like me who tortures his camera. I don't like the idea of carrying stuff around in a drive with moving parts.

Compact Flash better than Microdrive
Microdrive for removeable media? I have personally not had good luck with that, not rugged enough.
But...
1GB Compact Flash is available for less and no moving parts!
That is a better way to go I think.
