im in the market for a new motherboard.... along with a new cpu and possibly some new ram.

im looking for a motherboard that is a) fast (duh!), b) stable, c) compatible with all hardware, d) has onboard RAID, and e) that can overclock good. abit boards will meet (and in most cases exceed) all those requirements but i figure i should look around a little bit more. ive had abit boards for a long time and am fond of the O/C capabilities of them, but i know other boards are good too.

i eventually want to do watercooling (probably within the next 6 months) so overclocking features are a MUST! whats the use of buying a board that cant OC worth **** then buying watercooling for it?

saying all that... notice how i didnt mention what platform i want? it can be Intel OR AMD... im willing to buy either one. if i go Intel i want to get RDRAM for sure (i think). reading about the new RDRAM thats comming out (to support the 533mhz bus of the new P4s) it should OC better then current RDRAM.

thanks for your responses, in advance!

*i now relise that this has been discussed in MANY other threads. sorry.

My Personal favorite combination now a days is the gigabyte with with raid
Here

And with the price of the 2100+ sitting at $140 I would proably go ahead and drop that in it combined with some good quality ram. Im not sure exactly how fast the gigabyte board is in terms of crazy OC but I hit 153 or so FSB with no trouble, not sure how much higer a locked 1700+ would have gone though.
Welp thats my suggestion

i read a review that brought up these Cons of the Gigabyte board:

  • AMI Bios
  • Poor OC

since your obviously an overclocker (or i should use the technical term "enthusiast") do you think that these hinder the board (both usability and performance wise) at all?

also i noticed it has a Promise RAID controller, have you tried it? i used to have an MSI K7T266Pro a while back, which had the promise controller, and it was a pain the the *** to set up single drives (not in raid).

I only had the gigabyte for about a week really, but it was giving me trouble getting on my network, I figured it was just me so took it back and got a Soyo Dragon Plus thats what Im currently using.

I guess it really depends on how far you want to push the board/processor

Demon...isn't it the XP2000+ not the XP2100+ chip that Monarch is selling for $140? Please clarify.

Then you could buy an Abit Kt7A-R for super cheap.. that could OC better than most newer boards out there.

?Any Questions?

Sorry but I'll go with the EPoX 8K3A+ instead. While it has had some growing pains, it'll turn out to be a VERY solid O/C board IMHO.

Since its really nothing but an upgraded 8KHA+ (which is a GREAT board) how can you go wrong for $125 all included?
