Thermal Testing

  • Test System
  • Motherboard: ASUS P5AD2 Premium
  • CPU: Intel P4 3.6Ghz
  • Video: ATI X850 XT
  • Hard Drives: Four Western Digital hard drives, two 250GB, one 120GB, and one 80GB
  • Temperature sensors: AeroCool Gatewatch

To thermal test this case I filled it up with the hottest components I could get my hands onto. I stuffed them into the case, and ran two instances of Prime95 (for the CPU heat) and one of 3Dmark05 (for the Video card). I had all 4 WD hard drives plugged into power, but only one of them had a data cable attached (the 80GB). I then ran the system for a few hours and let the heat build, I then recorded the temperatures of the CPU from Asus Probe, and the temperatures of the video card, hard drives, and ambient temperature from the AeroCool Gatewatch. The temperature in the room I was testing in was a little warm, probably around 85F.

Here are the temperatures I recorded after a few hours of testing.

  • CPU: 53C
  • Hard drives: 141F
  • Video card: 178F
  • Ambient: 118F

As you can see, the CPU was within its acceptable temperature range, but then it does have the wind tunnel cooling it off. The Hard Drives were a little too hot, according to Western Digitals technical specifications the hard drives should not get above 131F. The Video Card was a little warm, but not in the danger range, and the Ambient temperature was about 10F higher then other cases.

Now I was using an ATI video card, if I was using a Nvidia card then you could probably expect the temperature to be even higher, that is because the ATI card's heatsink get its cool air from inside the case, and expels the hot air outside, while the Nvidia operates in reverse, it takes the cool air from outside the case and expels the hot air inside the case.

I believe the reason the case got so hot is because the only exhaust fans are the 120mm in the wind tunnel, and the power supply. All the hot air from the case rises up through the hard drives heating them up. I think this is a serious design flaw; they could probably get the case cooler by including an extra exhaust fan or two.
