Homeworld who?
I’ve been putting off writing this review for over a week now. Why? Because
I had no idea where to start. Hegemonia is one of those games that tends to defy
description. At first glance it looks like a simple clone of Sierra Studio’s
Homeworld; you command starships
in real-time in a 3D space environment. However, upon playing, it becomes apparent
that Hegemonia is something special. From DreamCatcher Games and Digital Reality,
(the same team that developed the highly-acclaimed Imperium Galactica series,)
comes an absolutely breathtaking and mind-spinning tactical gaming experience.

Regardless of your science-fiction preference, be it Babylon 5, Star Wars, Star
Trek or the like, every red-blooded sci-fi nerd loves it when gigantic starships
pull up alongside one another andfire with a barrage of lasers and projectiles.
Hegemonia captures this feeling so flawlessly it’ll make you giddy. The
first thing that will grab you will doubtlessly be the visuals. The “Walker”
engine is capable of some truly astonishing effects, with a display capacity
of 100,000 polygons on-screen at any given time. Sunlight hits a planet as it
rotates and night changes to day for the colonists on its surface. Squadrons
of missile corvettes blast through space, the color of their engine exhausts
indicating the empire for which they fight. Non-player ships like merchants
and transports zip back and forth between planets. Even space itself feels like
a living entity, filled with asteroid belts and nebulae. Of course, such ambiance
is all well and good, but Walker truly shines when diplomacy fails and you’re
forced to send your fleet into battle. I’ve seen ships and stations explode
many, many times in Hegemonia, but I still let out a barely-audible “wow…”
every time it happens. The game ran perfectly on our test system at 1600x1200,
with all details maxed. Hegemonia is the most beautiful RTS I’ve ever
seen, period. It’s hard to describe the level of detail, but I think these
screenshots speak for themselves.

In Space, No One Can Hear You Whine
Hegemonia has an appropriate orchestrated soundtrack that helps to capture the
epic feel of the game. The score also ratchets its volume and tempo up or down
depending on the level of action onscreen. The voice acting is believable, and
the sound effects are also fitting, but neither is anything extraordinary. Explosions
(and there are a lot of ‘em) are handled well, and sound quite powerful,
but on average the audio isn’t something you’ll be paying much attention
to.
