Vehicles remain fundamentally the same in Battlefield Vietnam with one very small change. YOU CAN SHOOT FROM PASSENGER SEATS. As long as your vehicle does not enclose you in a thick metal casing, you can wield your weapon from any non-gunner position in a vehicle. This addition is very useful when you are in the MUTT, a small and fast transport, or the Huey, a widely known and extensively used helicopter. I can only imagine how much fun this feature would be in the Desert Combat mod while driving a Technical, a pickup truck with a large gun, full of troops.
The maximum amount of people a given vehicle can carry is six. This limited capacity is somewhat disappointing because there is clearly room for more in the some of the larger vehicles. While the Chinook helicopter has anrear allowing more troops to crawl and just stand there, they will not be able to jump out because parachutes are only given to those in a passenger slot. Another problem is that running over people is nearly impossible. Other players merely slide across the ground and if that player is a bot, their perfect accuracy will have you getting shot fairly quickly.
Ground
Tank combat is unchanged from Battlefield 1942 to Battlefield Vietnam. Basically everything you would expect is here: rotating turrets, machine gun mounts, weak armor in the rear and thick in the front. The T110 mobile artillery sees action in the jungle while the Russian made T-54 roams the city. The large BM21 truck has a huge array of missiles on the back, allowing it to blast through every tank in the game. Keep in mind however that the heaviest tanks used in Vietnam were medium tanks. The city maps contain a new vehicle: the Scooter. With a rear-facing passenger, one able the fire his weapon, some interesting combat is bound to take place.
Amphibious and Water
In swampy areas and rivers, you have access to everything from a homemade raft with a motor to the amphibious BTR 60 troop transport. The BTR 60 is quite useful when storming a base but can be easily overcome by a sneaky combatant who can get close enough to shoot the passengers inside through the side portals. The cheap raft type boats are at every base on swamp maps. Try not to depend on them because they often get stuck on the waterfront housing, which are the huts elevated by long branches. The larger American PBR attack boat must not even utilize its forward and rear mounted machine guns to destroy one of these. It need only charge at full speed to see the tiny boat meet its untimely demise.
Jets
Jets have been introduced in Battlefield Vietnam. You can have 'dogfights' as most planes have machine guns. There is also the addition of heat seeking missiles. For the US, the F4 Phantom carries twelve of these missiles and when fired they automatically target whatever is in front of you. The Phantom is also loaded with napalm that present a glorious display of fire all over the targeted area. Although the US A7 Corsair is mainly a bomber, it has a cannon for tight situations. The Vietnamese side employs the MiG-17 and the MiG-21. While both are very maneuverable the MiG-21 seems to be tougher. Jet combat is difficult overall in Battlefield Vietnam. This difficulty is a result of moving to fast, which leads to running off the map, or moving too slow and crashing. Even at low speeds it is very difficult to bomb your target. I recommend a decent joystick and lots of practice if you hope to fly the planes like a pro.

If you have played the Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942, then the first thing you will notice is that the helicopters are more stable. Hovering and landing are much easier to do in Battlefield Vietnam; however, other aspects are more difficult. The new feature of airlifting vehicles is tremendously difficult. Airlifting vehicles has the potential to be very useful but unfortunately the developers have made it nearly impossible to execute. You must hover over an exact and unmarked point over the vehicle; then the threshold for success is very small. After you overcome the extreme difficulty of this process, all which is left is fun. You can drop the vehicle on tanks, which is another difficult process all in itself, or take it to the enemy base and launch an attack. The vehicle can be occupied while airlifted and will disconnect if the occupants try to move it, on the ground or not.
The Apache helicopter gives the pilot the use of conventional missile launchers, which not the best, while the gunner seat has access to heat seeking missiles and machineguns. This helicopter seems a bit unfair as the lone pilot will see. The Vietnamese have mostly large troop transport helicopters, which are also equipped with machineguns or rockets. The largest helicopter in the game is the US Army's tandem-rotor Chinook. This huge transport has machineguns for the pilot in addition to guns and portals on either side for passengers. The Huey has two variations; one for transport and one for combat. The combat version has cannons and a grenade launcher. The transport version, my personal favorite, has anpassenger section allowing for two players to use mounted guns and two to use their handheld weapons making it an effective gunship. This action is where vehicles are moved and memories are made by rapidly storm bases or clean out the jungle
the fun never ends.
