Installation and Testing

Crystal Orb

The Crystal Orb took all of 30 seconds to install onto my Visiontek Geforce 3 Ti200, the hardest part being getting the retail fan off the card. I accomplished this by sticking it in the freezer in a plastic zip lock bag for about an hour, and then used a credit card and flat head screwdriver to carefully pry it off. Getting squeamish already? As they say, no pain no gain, just remember to take your time and enjoy voiding you warranty=P. After you get the retail heatsink off, the crystal orb snaps right into place onto the GPU, a bit of Artic SivlerIII was used between the orb and the GPU to help with heat dissipation.

Iceberq

Installation of the Iceberq did not go quite as well. Seems Vantec did not check up on the reference design, at least not of the Ti200. The holes on the card did not match up quite right with those on the cooler. The only way I could get it installed, without taking off the lower RAM sinks, was by angling the pin. This caused the cooler not to site as flat as it should have on the GPU of the card.

To test how effective each solution was at removing heat from the GPU, a thermal probe was inserted between the GPU and each cooler. 3D Mark 2001SE Fill Rate test runs in an infinite loop providing the heat for these bad boys to dissipate, then the GPU was over-clocked and the tests were run again.

Well there you have it folks, the numbers speak for themselves and show that the Crystal Orb is still king of the hill. Vantec has thrown a lot of goodies in the box, including some sinks for your motherboard chipset or what not. I personally could not find a good use for them and would rather not have them if it would take the cost down some. The misalignment of the holes on the cooler was another disappointment, though not that big of a problem and did not take away from the cooling power of the Iceberq. Even though Vantec was not able to dethrone the Crystal Orb, it looks to me like the GPU cooler market is going to be heating up, I can't wait to see who else jumps on the bandwagon.

Pros
Just looks so good
Does not take up a PCI Slot

Cons
Misaligned holes
Cost
