| We often rely on the power supply's lower fan to help evacuate warm air
coming off the CPU. In the case of the Enermax unit this is done with a
90mm adjustable speed fan on the bottom of the unit and an 80mm fan on the
back. The Enermax should be mounted upside down to take advantage of this. |

| The I-Star however, is not laid out in the usual configuration. It relies
on four 40mm Sunon fans (two on each unit) to keep things cool and receives
the air flow through an array of perforations on the rear and sides. If
the power supply is used as a major component in case cooling, this should
be taken into consideration. |

What Makes the I-Star the Real Star
|
| In many ways it may be unfair to compare these two units side by side
because they are as different as apples and oranges. The I-Star is not just
about wattage, it's also about keeping your system up and running in the
event of a failure. A single power supply simply cannot make such a claim
because if it fails, your system is burnt toast, at least for awhile. |

| The hot swapping feature needs some comment. It works very efficiently,
requiring only a light nudge of the sliding lock release and a pull on the
handle. The power supply slides out quite easily and slides back in smoothly.
Even the handles are nicely done, swinging out of the way when not in use. |

I-Star Hot Swap Partially Removed
|
| |
| You can see in these photos that there's quite a bit involved when making
power supplies hot swappable. It's amazing that I-Star has been able to
pack all the features in such small units and have done so in a very elegant
and tightly engineered package. Each power supply is only 1-7/16" (37mm)
high, 4-5/8" (120mm) wide and 6-3/8" (165mm) long. |

| Beyond the advantages of redundancy however, are some other features we
don't normally expect from a power supply. The three power-on LEDs on the
back panel for example, are something we don't normal see. I-Star has taken
things one step further, offering up three LEDs which can be mounted remotely
to show the power status of the unit. For the case modders out there, the
new toys to play with will be appreciated. For those really serious about
knowing what going on in their system, this offers a little extra security. |
