The Jungle

The new engine contains dense vegetation that makes for a more dynamic style of game play. These settings make it easy to hide. While playing, one has the option of choosing from many concealed paths, which take one the next base to capture unlike Battlefield 1942 where you are out in theall the time. The graphics engine efficiently shows you crisp textures off in the distance while giving you detailed trees and bushes up close. The engine smoothly makes the texture transition as you advance through the jungle with your M-16 in hand. Vietnamese huts are accurately shown being made from bamboo sticks and palm trees complete with bags of rice inside. These huts can be used for cover. In the clearings, you can explore ruins from ancient civilizations just waiting to be occupied and realizing that they make excellent perimeters.

Urban warfare in Battlefield Vietnam has made a major improvement over Battlefield 1942 and its many mods. If you have ever played Battlefield 1942 you know that it is easy to get lost in the maze of stocky buildings and dead ends, only few of which you can enter to find a cramped space. In this cramped space you may be able to locate a window that gives you a half-decent view of the action that is if you are lucky. Fortunately, these buildings have all changed in the fact that nearly every structure has an interior you can cut through and/or fight in as you make your way to the enemy base. Many of these have second and third floors with huge windows to shoot from, and one can also shoot from behind a pile of rubble. The incredible detail is evident in everything from tall standing structures to a half torn down concrete mess. They must not have had protective duct tape in Vietnam because there is no glass on the windows, which makes it easy to jump into one. The player will come across ammo boxes and medical cabinets in buildings near a base. On the upper floors you will find paths to the roofs of neighboring structures, allowing you to move unseen. Down below amateur opponents will be scratching their heads wondering where those grenades are coming from.

Sound

The sound in Battlefield Vietnam is realistic with bullets zipping past and hitting trees. Tanks, helicopters and boats all sound like what you would expect from a modern action game, but Battlefield Vietnam goes a step further by adding music from the era. Sixties music such as War: What Is It Good For?, Wild Thing, and Surfin' Bird can be played when you are in any vehicle through the radio menu. Although the music will give away your position, it is a very nice touch. When playing, you can even add your own mp3's in the game folder. The songs will also play automatically while you wait for maps to load.

Another interesting addition on urban maps is speakers that convey messages designed to discourage US soldiers. An example of these messages is told by a woman with a Vietnamese accent: "You know you cannot win, soldier. It is best to leave sinking ship." When stationed at the main US base on other maps, you will hear radio comedy and announcements from the Vietnam era. The sounds of the game help to bring the game and the war to life.
