When considering a motherboard there are a few "must have"
items. Performance and features reign at the top of these "must have"
items for many users. Stability is an understood "must have"
for every user. While comparing the KD7 to other motherboards on the market,
you cannot help but see the board fits more in the middle of the pack
in performance and features. ABIT is not accustomed to finding themselves
in this territory.
The performance of the KD7 remained rather close to the Gigabyte 7VRXP
board in the benchmarks, but it still fell short of the bar established
by the KT333 board. This certainly was a surprise since the KD7 has the
newer KT400 chipset, and the 7VRXP has the year old KT333 chipset.
Features, such as the Hardware Thermal Protection, a feature laden BIOS,
and four memory slots are a welcome addition to the features provided
by the KT400. These features alone do not justify a front row seat for
the KD7. A couple of suggestions for ABIT would be to include features
such as Serial ATA and more USB ports.
The cost of the KD7 gives a boost to the value of this offering from
ABIT. The KD7 comes in under $90 online. That is not bad considering you
are getting AGP 8x, USB 2.0, and 166MHz FSB support for the new Athlon
Thoroughbred B core. DDR400 is not worth mentioning at this point, considering
the performance results at that speed.
