Obviously AMD has scored big with the new Athlon
64 and Athlon 64 FX line of processors. Performance wise, the
Athlon 64 exceeds the expectations we have had for some time.
When we benchmarked some of these applications, we had to check
a few times to make sure everything was in order because the numbers
the Athlon 64 produced were such as leap over the Athlon XP.

Using our simple sea website templates on our site you can buy website templates There are a few things that may become clear as we move toward
the New Year. Right now the expected yield for the Athlon 64 CPU
is to be in the neighborhood of 80K chips for the remainder of
2003 and greater numbers in the 1st Quarter of 2004. While this
may appear to be large numbers they are not really that big when
you look at a world wide launch. This will force prices to remain
high as availability will be tight.
Another issue surrounding the prices of the Athlon 64 needs to
be addressed as well. As of now the Athlon 64 3200+ will debut
at under $500. The Athlon FX-51 should be just under $800. For
many this will be too much to justify an upgrade when you add
the cost of the motherboard as well. Many will most likely set
on the fence and wait for the prices to drop. This is where the
problem lies. All signs have pointed to AMD being unwilling to
drop their prices as they have done in the past and compete with
Intel on price alone. If this is true, I believe that would be
a mistake on the part of AMD. Despite loyal fans buying AMD processors
over the years, price has always been a significant factor in
looking beyond Intel and buying AMD.
Despite it all, AMD needs to be given credit for making the
right moves that have not only rejuvenated the Athlon product
line, but they have also positioned themselves to increase their
lead even more when 64-bit applications make their way on the
scene. Since it will be a little while before that happens, we
will just sit back and watch the Athlon 64 blister these 32-bit
apps in the meantime.
