Having tried so many different cards over the years, using various 3D
accelerator chips from makers such as 3dFX, NVIDIA, Matrox, S3 and ATI,
I have always loved the look of the ATI cards. All
accelerators are slightly different in appearance. To explain this, one
time I looked at a demo of an aquarium with fish and bubbles. On one card,
the bubbles looked fake and cartoonish. On the next card, the bubbles
appeared clear and realistic. These differences were noticed in games
as well. The Radeon cards have never suffered from this lack of quality.
The original Radeon did not score as well on 3DMark as the NVIDIA at the
time, but game frame rates were comparable. This was mostly due to the
way software was written. ATi has made improvements on their drivers over
the last year and a half, greatly increasing performance and stability.
But that is another story. Again, the overall visual quality of the Radeon
was superior. They have vibrant colors, and crisp clean edges!
The 9800 Pro is a real winner for ATI, although at a premium price.
I know there are a lot of enthusiasts and gamers out there who are
eyeing this card. It will not disappoint them. This year is going
to continue to bring us some very nice surprises. ATI plans to introduce
a 256MB version of this card toward the end of April. The extra memory
will be needed for games built on theL, Doom III engine. With
the $399.00 suggested retail price, it is by no means low priced.
We will have to wait and see what the 256MB version will cost. This
is a card I hate to see go back!
