Technically, Generals is an absolute achievement in the RTS genre. It
is the strategy piñata of eye candy. I actually found myself wanting
to launch nukes, not to defeat the enemy, but to see the terror and awe-inspiring
explosion and watch as the mushroom cloud rises to the heavens. The attention
to detail is excellent, although the models themselves are not very graphically
complex. When you're zoomed up on a soldier or building, they aren't the
most detailed models you'll ever see, but all the graphical elements come
together in an almost perfect way. The terrain and water effects looks fantastic,
which makes it all the more unfortunate that there aren't any aquatic units
in Generals. (I would've loved to see a carrier sink in the Generals graphics
engine.) While not quite as eye-popping as the visuals the audio serves
its purpose. A mix of gunshots, yelps, and explosions coincide with the
voice acting. The latter can be a bit cheesy and stereotypical at times,
but is mostly spot-on. Unfortunately, all of these beautiful visuals come
at a rather high price. Generals is probably the most hardware-intensive
game out right now, and I wouldn't recommend trying to play it on anything
less than a 1.5Ghz system with 384MB RAM and a GeForce4. (I'm running a
2200XP+ with 512MB DDR and a Radeon 9700 Pro, and I still had to turn down
the detail settings to have it play without slowdown.) |
