Final Impressions

The AMD Athlon XP2400+ held its ground well against the XP2600+, XP2700+, and the XP2800+, but the 333MHz FSB gunslingers definitely have an edge. There was a noticeable jump in performance in the benchmarks from the 266MHz FSB to the 333MHz FSB. It looks like AMD has a new sheriff in town.

As far as pricing, you would have to be blind not to notice the competitors pricing on their equivalent CPUs. They clearly have AMD in their sights. These Thoroughbreds will probably ride into the sunset soon, as the much-anticipated Barton and Opteron chips are around the corner.

Having played with several different unlocked AMD CPUs containing the palomino core and running 333MHz FSB on them, I was surprised to see the difference in the scores. My personal favorite was a XP2000+ running at 333MHz FSB. After running many tests on the XP2000 there was little difference in scores on benchmarks between the 266MHz FSB and the 333MHz FSB. This has obviously changed now as, as in every benchmark there is a noticeable increase in performance from the 266FSB to the 333FSB. Looking at the tests, the best value for the dollar would be the XP2600+. If you wish to rise above deputy and be the sheriff the XP2800+ will be your CPU of choice.

If you are running anything below an XP1800+ you may want to start looking at these "wanted" chips. Upgrading from an XP1800+ to the XP2800+ would give you a real world performance jump of 717MHz actual, and the gain of 33MHz on the FSB. It is very important to understand that you need a motherboard that supports the new 333MHz FSB settings to run these CPUs. As for AMD, it seems obvious that this is purely a marketing ploy to keep all of us AMD fans happy with new faster chips to keep up with the seemingly new CPU release every other week by Intel. Until the cowboy hat can be picked up from the dust and put back on AMD's head, we all have to be happy with the last bit of power from the Thoroughbred's core.
