Subject: RAID

RAID Level 0 (Striping)

RAID level 0 does not provide fault tolerance. This level is also known as disk striping, because it uses a disk file system called a stripe set. Data is divided into blocks and is spread in a fixed order among all the disks in the array. RAID level 0 improves read and write performance by spreading operations across multiple disks, so that operations can be performed independently. For this exercise, we will be focusing on RAID Level 0.

This common specification pertaining to a hard drives reliability is usually measured in hours, and is loosely intended to represent the average amount of time that will pass between random failures on a drive. This value is specified for almost every IDE and SCSI drive. This number is also always misinterpreted. To be understood properly, the MTBF figure is intended to be used in combination with the stated service life of the drive, which is the standard amount of time before the drive enters the period where failures due to component exhaust increase. The drive's warranty length and stated service life is considered by many to be more indicative of what the expected durability really is. For example, our Seagate ST318452LW has a warranty length and stated service life of five years. This is surely a more accurate representation of the MTBF over the professed 1,200,000 hours. Therefore, the Mean Time between Failure (MTBF) of the array will be equal to the MTBF of an individual drive, divided by the number of drives in the array. In our example, we are using four ST318452LW hard drives striped with a MTBF of 1,200,000 hours. This means that each drive will operate for 300,000 hours before failure (300,000X4=1,200,000), occurs. This does not mean that each drive will operate for 1,200,000 hours. Again, this theoretical MTBF is mostly based on analysis of historical failure rates of similar drives.
