Introduction

With the introduction of the GeForce4 chip last spring, NVIDIA kept their reputation intact by providing a powerful chip capable of performance unseen in previous generations of 3D gaming cards. That was last spring though. Since that time, ATI has slipped in a few products that have won the hearts and wallets of many computer enthusiasts. The offerings from ATI have attracted many buyers because of features and performance unavailable from the GeForce4 product line.

A much talked about feature making its way on to some of these new video cards is AGP 8X. This feature is part of the new AGP 3.0 standard that was included on most new motherboards last fall. The GeForce4 chip was introduced prior to the new specification in the old AGP 4X incarnation. Thus the GeForce4 cards have not been able to utilize the benefits of this new standard, until now.

NVIDIA could not afford to loose any business because the GeForce4 has an AGP 4X bus and a competitor has an AGP 8X bus. So NVIDIA has refreshed the GeForce4 product line to support AGP 8X. Just keep reading to see what AGP 8X brings to the table in the GeForce4 products.

The Technology

The jump from AGP 4X to AGP 8X should, in theory, double the throughput of the GeForce4 cards. Due to this expected increase in performance, there are also promises of significant improvements for complex visualizations, allowing for graphics environments that are more realistic. In addition, the isochronous mode operation feature of the AGP 3.0 implementation specifically improves graphics operations that require predictable, uninterrupted data flow, such as real-time flows of digital information for video broadcasts and network downloads.

A look at the raw numbers for AGP 3.0 will lead you to believe there is a dramatic increase in performance for the new AGP 8X cards over the AGP 4X versions from NVIDIA. The problem with such an assumption is there are many more factors determining the performance of a video card. There have been no changes to the architecture of the GeForce4 products other than the widening of the AGP bus. Taking this into consideration, the expectations of a colossal performance leap should be brought into check.

In order to compare the real world benefits of the new GeForce4 cards from NVIDIA, we have run a series of tests comparing the old Ti4400 to the new Ti4800SE. The specifications for both of these cards are the same, as the chart below reveals, so we should certainly see just how the AGP 8X bus benefits the GeForce4 Ti cards.

Since there have been no changes to the Ti4400 core, many wonder what the justification for the name change is. It could be said it is misleading to name the Ti4400 a Ti4800SE without increasing the speed of the card above the current Ti4400 cards or the Ti4600 for that matter. Certainly many will buy the cards thinking 4800 is faster than 4600, even though the Ti4600 is clocked higher than the Ti4800SE. This certainly illustrates the need to compare purchases thoroughly before buying based on the name of a video card. Remember, some consider the job of a Marketing Department to get you to buy a lesser product for more money.
