Performance

Many cases on the market have pluses and minuses and the Kingwin is no exception. The Kingwin followed the now almost industry standard of screw-less case design which added to its overall appeal. However this feature was taken to a bit of an extreme with the front panel utilizing six thumbscrews to attach the face. This is partly for looks and partly for function but was found to be a little cumbersome when you need to access the front panel.

The thumbscrews were helpful in the easy access of the motherboard tray. With the removal of four thumbscrews the motherboard slides easily out. Unlike traditional cases with motherboard trays, Kingwin has thought through the changing times and has helped perfect the tray design. The tray now provides ample room for removing the motherboard and processor entirely intact with even the biggest heatsink and processor on the market mounted. Kingwin has also beefed up the tray and added 2 reinforcement tabs that have been placed at the top and bottom of the tray for added motherboard support.

Continuing on the tour of the inside of the case you will notice the hard drive racks which are very similar to the Lian-Li pc-60. The only drawback with Kingwin's take on the design is they have off centered the hard drive rack to make room for all the firewire/usb/microphone and earphone jacks. This allows some airflow to bypass the non-removable hard drive rack all together. The 3.5 exterior rack is non-removable which may pose a problem if you are running an extremely full case.

What's probably the single most important feature in cases?

  • Fans
  • Non-Restrictive Airflow
  • Ample Room For Hardware
  • Heat Dissipation by Alloy Composition Of Chasse
  • Positioning Of Intake and Exhaust Fans
  • All of the above.

So what's the answer? Like many of those tests you took in school the answer is all of the above. Airflow in the case is affected by all of these factors and all of these must be considered when buying a case. In many ways Kingwin has thought about these features. Kingwin started by placing two 80mm fans, which pull a total of 64.8 CFM into the case. This air is drawn into the case through a filter and across the removable hard drive rack, which is where a lot of internal case heat is formed. The filter as stated before will help with the intake of dust into your case but these filters will have to be cleaned and changed occasionally. This task will be made a little more difficult because both fans must be removed before the filter housing can be taken out. Two more 80mm fans are placed in the rear of the case for the completion of the circulation of air in the case. These four fans should provide ample airflow in the case. It may be recommended that power users consider the addition of an intake fan on the side panel and/or a blowhole in the top of the case for added airflow. It is also possible to purchase one of the non-window versions of the case so that these features are already added; unfortunately the addition of these two fans means the loss of the windows in the case. The addition of the acrylic windows does not help the dissipation of heat as much as a solid alloy case but a change in temperature probably won't be noticed. Finally one nice unique feature of this case is the two-rear fans placement. These fans are actually located on the motherboard tray. This placement will allow you to remove the fans along with the motherboard for easy cleaning. (Yes you need to remove the dust and lint from your fans from time to time!)

There were a few things about this case you should be aware. With the addition of acrylic windows you must be careful not to scratch the windows. The windows will scratch rather easily and this will affect the overall appearance of the case. If you plan on moving your case to LAN parties or a friend's house it is recommended you look at the non-window versions that support all the important cooling features. It might also be noted the case AthlonXP obtained did have a few problems with the side panels. These side panels were not easily removed or installed and were difficult to seat properly. Finally the Power and Reset buttons are chrome-covered plastic, which makes them prone to wear.
