So I inserted them in single-channel configuration and that did the trick. I was puzzled so I called Gigabyte. They claimed that it was the ram, not the motherboard, but offered me a newer BIOS. I flashed the motherboard BIOS to version F4h and like magic, the ram suddenly worked perfectly in dual-channel configuration. So as it turns out, there was absolutely nothing wrong with our test subject. Many people do not realize that a simple flash to a newer BIOS can resolve conflicts such as these, but it is quite common, so if you run into the same type of issue, make sure you are using the latest BIOS from the motherboard manufacturer.
The chips on these modules are manufactured by a company called Mosel Bitelic according to Simpletech's tech support team. They seem to be of good quality. The stock timings, or latency of the modules at 200Mhz is 2.5-3-3-8. Even at 166Mhz, the supported timings are 2-3-3-7. I am happy to say that I was able to run this set at 200Mhz at 2-2-2-5 timings stable. That's tighter timings than the SPD reports for the 166Mhz frequency. Quite impressive as these are very aggressive timings, even at slower speeds. Unfortunately, the more aggressive timings did not increase performance as thought. Running this set at 2-2-2-5 timings resulted in slightly lower benchmark scores when using SiSoft Sandra 2004. The biggest difference comes from the configuration of the ram as far as single or dual channel mode.
Here we can compare the difference in performance between single-channel and dual-channel in the same exact system. I used SiSoft Sandra 2004 to perform the memory bandwidth benchmarks.
