Single Player

The single player missions consist of standard C&C fare: survive for x minutes, destroy x targets, eliminate enemy at x location, etc, with a few twists and surprises along the way. Don't get me wrong, they're very well done and the majority of them are fun to play, but single player ultimately serves as little more than training for multiplayer. Each side has a total of seven missions, each prefaced with an in-game cutscene to familiarize the player with the scenario and objectives. For the most part, the missions are disconnected and do not further an all-encompassing storyline, like in previous C&Cs. In terms of difficulty, most strategy veterans will breeze right through single player on normal. That's not to say there aren't some tricky parts, but again, if you've played C&C, you know what to expect here, and should probably crank up the difficulty if you want a challenge.

Multi Player

To test the multiplayer component of Generals, I brought my machine over a buddy's house and set up a small network. (We're both grizzled Command and Conquer veterans, although I'm probably the more grizzled of the two.) With me playing as the US, him as China, and a hard AI as the GLA, we started a game. The three sides play off each other beautifully, and the player who is able to more efficiently utilize their side's advantage and exploit the enemy's disadvantage will earn the ever-welcome "Victory" screen. (Although that screen is the same dumb picture of a mountain range for every side.) Fortunately, the lag that sometimes crippled RA2 during LAN games is nowhere to be found.
