Synthetic and Software/Production Benchmarking

SiSoft Sandra ver 2002.1.8.59 This benchmark is run by just about everybody that has ever built a system to see how well it performs. These benchmarks are a quick and easy way to see how your system stacks up against others as these results are quoted on every website you find. In the CPU Benchmark, the Tiger MPX holds a slight advantage over the Thunder K7X platform in the CPU and Multimedia benchmarks. In the Memory benchmark the Thunder K7X leads both the Tiger MP and MPX platforms. As expected the Thunder K7X is performing right in line with its siblings.

Content Creation Winstone 2001 ver 1.01 is a system-level, application-based benchmark that measures a PC's overall performance. Content Creation will keep several applicationsat once and switches among those applications. Programs used during this are Adobe Photoshop 5.5, Adobe Premiere 5.1, Macromedia Director 8.0, Macromedia Dreamweaver 3.0, Netscape Navigator 4.73, and Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 4.5.

In this benchmark our performance is compared to a base machine's performance score. This base system scores a 10 when running the test. The Thunder K7X setup runs the benchmark a bit more than 7 times better/faster than the base system. For more info on the base system and setup information you can go HERE

Business Winstone 2001 ver 1.01 is another system-level, application-based benchmark that measures a PC's overall performance. Business Winstone runs real applications through a series of scripted activities and uses the time a PC takes to complete those activities to produce its performance scores.

The same base system comparison is used in Business Winstone that was used in the Content Creation benchmark to produce the performance score. The Thunder K7X again performs inline with the Tiger MP and MPX platforms. You can't help but notice that RED bar blazing up the graph. Our Thunder K7 performance boost is due to the fact that we had a SCSI raid running with that platform. Our goal in this review is to test the systems stability and chipset performance in comparison to the other platforms. Later in the review we will reveal why. SCSI performance aside the Thunder K7X's performance is right on the mark.

POV-Ray creates three-dimensional, photo-realistic images using a rendering technique called ray-tracing. It reads in a text file containing information describing the objects and lighting in a scene and generates an image of that scene from the viewpoint of a camera also described in the text file. I ran the Pawn benchmark. In the graph's legend below, you will see several different optimizations used to run the tests. The optimized coding is the only difference between each test. There is quite a difference achieved by optimized coding alone.

Smaller numbers are better as this reflects the time it takes in seconds to complete the rendering. The results are a dead heat across the board. Again, the differences are minimal.

CLI Bench MK III SMP is as stated on the web page, a different benchmarking solution. This benchmark runs a gamut of synthetic benchmarks that includes: Dhrystones, Whetstones, Eight queens' problem, Matrix operations, Number Crunching, Floating point, memory throughput, hard disk's throughput and the CPU usage.

Again it's a dead heat across all three platforms.

Science Mark 1.0 will measure the performance of your computer by the execution of a few tests, including the simulation of liquid argon, energy calculation of H2O, and the like. When comparing the three tests, smaller numbers are better.

The score is a result of a comparison to a base system, which has a final score of 100. The margins are again really close but the Thunder K7X is the overall winner by a hair. FYI, this test does not support SMP and is run entirely on one processor.

Cinebench 2000 is another benchmarking program that uses raytracing to test the CPU for performance. This benchmark also supports SMP as evident in the multiple CPU raytracing result.

Larger numbers here are better. I am sure you are wondering what a CB unit is. Well the explanation that is given is using a reference system of a Pentium 133 MHz. The result represents how much faster your system is than the reference. Notice the increase in performance with the utilization of both processors in the Raytracing (Multi CPU) result. Again, the margin that separates the platforms is minimal.

SPECviewperf 6.1.2 parses command lines and data files, sets the rendering state, and converts data sets to a format that can be traversed usingL rendering calls. It renders the data set for a pre-specified amount of time or number of frames with animation between frames. Finally, it outputs the result. SPECviewperf reports performance in frames per second. In this benchmark, higher numbers are better.

Through all the benchmarks the Thunder K7X has performed at or above the other platforms. The stability of the platform was excellent throughout all our testing. Even though the Thunder K7X is designed mainly for server/high-end workstation applications the question is always asked, "Does it game well"? For this reason we ran a couple gaming benchmarks on the Thunder K7X.

Thunder K7X is running a bit behind the others in this benchmark. Falling short of the Tiger MPX by 173 points and the Tiger MP by 184 points.

DroneZ

DroneZ is a unique benchmark. The graphics and visual effects are truly amazing. I have run this benchmark repeatedly just to watch the graphics. Another feature you may not be aware of is that DroneZ is a multithreaded game/benchmark such as Quake III. The difference is DroneZ automatically recognizes the Dual processor configuration rather than having to manually input the SMP "switch" as with Quake III.

Again the Thunder K7X falls behind but the produced frame rates are still very playable. After a long day of work, a couple of levels of UT, Ghost Recon or Medal of Honor across the company LAN is a great way to relax before that frustrating ride home.
