Weapons

 

Weapons are one of the most important components of the game. People who have already familiarized themselves with UT2k3's weapons are in a lot of luck. In the options screen, players have the ability to change the way a weapon looks. The Link Gun, one of the weapons in UT2k4, has been remodeled, but Epic felt it was necessary to keep the old models of the guns in the game so people can slowly make the transition of weapon models slowly, or not at all. When playing this game, do you realize that the gun is taking up too much room on the screen and you want to change gun's position? Change it! As in UT2k3, in the options screen under "Player," you can make the weapons models smaller in order to take up less space. Therefore it would become much easier to see people around you. You can also hide the weapon completely if you choose to. You can use default right, centered, and left handed models if you prefer to use one of them.

In UT2k4, the starting weapons are the Assault Rifle and a Shield Gun. One can already assume that the Assault Rifle is the weakest weapon in the game and therefore the most inaccurate. The only good thing about the Assault Rifle is that it has the ability to have a grenade launcher, and one can "upgrade" this gun by grabbing another Assault Rifle to use two at once.

The Shield Gun is very different from other weapons and when used correctly it is extremely deadly. The Shield Gun is rarely used because people see starting weapons as junk (i.e. Assault Rifle). The Shield Gun is both an offensive AND defensive weapon. Its alternate fire is… A SHIELD. It can be used to guard the ball receiver in Bombing Run, protect the flag carrier in Capture-The-Flag, or just to annoy snipers trying to kill you.





In special circumstances, you are given the Translocator weapon. This weapon is a teleporting weapon, which can be useful in both offensive and defensive ways. You can hide the locator camera/teleport point in an enemy base, and capture the flag twice as fast. The Translocator's camera is useful to guard around corners and to spot enemy troops. Offensively, you can completely humiliate another player by doing a "Telefrag." This term means that you teleported right on top of him or her. While this move is extremely tough to execute, it provides a great sense of accomplishment and complete, total defeat for your poor, scared enemy. It's also a nice way to save your ammo too!

The owners of Unreal Tournament's first two installments noticed a lack of the infamous "Sniper Rifle" and its glorious 10x zoom. If you hadn't guessed already why I would talk about this "obsolete" weapon, well… IT'S BACK. For the UT2k3 lovers never fear because the creators have kept the Lightning Gun for an elite sniper backup. Both weapons are similar and obviously the Lightning Gun has its lightning while the Sniper Rifles utilizes bullets. But, if my mind serves me correctly, the Original UT turned the semi-automatic weapon into a bolt-action gun. The reload times on both weapons are relatively the same.

In a theoretical situation one assumes the role of a Gung-HO person with massive Weapons of Mass Destruction (so that's where they went...). The essential needs for that person would really consist of: FC-03B (more commonly known as the Flak Cannon) triple barrel Rocket Launcher, ASMD Shock Rifle (more commonly known just as the Shock Rifle), MiniGun, Link Gun, and the BioRifle. You think your ready for action? Well, not yet! This game isn't the same game as UT or UT2k3. We have more work to do. In the third installment there are four new weapons, not including the reimplementation of the Sniper Rifle and the new super weapon.

The new weapons are the Mine Layer, the AVRiL, an Anti-Vehicle Fuel Rocket Launcher, and the Grenade Launcher. When you fire the mine, or spiders, they will just sit there. Don't fret because you can make them move around with the right click function. Right click on where you want them to go. Upon reaching their destination, they will explode. When properly used, you can have people run in terror while massive armies of spiders decide to explode on contact.

"Oh no! There's a Goliath Tank coming my way!! What ever am I supposed to do?!" There is an easy solution and that is the AVRiL. Unlike the 3-barreled Rocket Launcher, this baby can lock-on to vehicles instantaneously and causes a considerable amount of damage. If you are more like me, you can use them on regular infantry as well. If you have psychic powers and can predict their next location or you happen to be skilled/ just plain lucky, it can cause considerable damage. The downside to this weapon is that it is much slower than its light-weight counterpart. It cannot be loaded to fire multiple missiles. This weapon's reload time is about six seconds and can be easily dodged by regular people. It can take out the light weight vehicles in one shot; however, more heavily armored vehicles require more shots.

The Grenade Launcher is one of those weapons that you wonder why they put it in the game. I really don't have much to say about this one because they have one in the game attached to the pea-shooter of an Assault Rifle. I have an inkling why Epic decided to implement the Grenade launcher; one can attach it to vehicles, which is extremely useful. Unlike the 'bouncy grenades', the grenade launcher can be used as pipe-bombs, or just firing them and scaring the enemy. With a brilliant mind, and a couple of incautious opponents, you can bomb an entire area of your choosing, granted you placed a bomb there before. They hurt vehicles and humans alike... Oh, robots and aliens, Skaarj, and everyone else. Like always, normal explosions come with splash damage.

Every one has to love the biggest, most damaging, and super explosive weapons, right? It is true in this review anyway. If you have played the Original UT, you are already quite familiar with the "Redeemer", a mini-nuclear missile. As we progress through the installments, we find ourselves with another super weapon, the Ion Painter. Ion Painter appears to be a harmless weapon to the occasional player who has not been fragged by it. What the Ion Painter does, is fire a harmless ray of light red laser. If in sight of the Ion Cannon Satellite, it becomes a thick red harmless beam of light. Woo… Oh, I almost forgot to mention that the Satellite fires a massive beam with two terawatts in ionized plasma streams, killing everyone within its 50 meters blast radius. In the game play environment of UT2k4 is the new is the Targeting Painter, the Ion Painter's brother. When the beam is fixed on a nonmoving target, the beam becomes a thick harmless beam, just like the Ion Painter's beam. A few seconds later, a Phoenix Bomber comes and drops a line of bombs over the target area. Be careful that you're not in the blast radius of the bombs.
