Set-up and Installation

Having set up a few liquid cooling systems, we can tell you that this is a cake walk compared to any of the previous ones. Instead of separate components from various companies, everything came in one box. There was no need to cut and fit each component, because they are all installed and ready to run. Absolutely no modifications were made to the LianLi PC60 case used in this review.

The first part of the installation is a rather routine installation of the CPU and water block. In our case, we installed an AMD Athlon 1700 XP. Because of its compact size, the water block proved to be easier to install than even a stock CPU cooler. To stick with the "all in one box" theme, we used the Shin-Etsu thermal paste that was supplied. We found it to be more difficult to apply than the Arctic Silver we're accustomed to using, but after a couple tries we were able to apply it properly.

We slipped the mounting clip through the pre-attached tubing and mounted it to the CPU with a simple bit of leverage from a flat blade screwdriver. A small slot is in the bracket, just below theng for the screwdriver shown here, makes mounting extremely simple. We have never installed an AMD CPU cooler, air or liquid cooled, that was this straightforward.

As you can see here, this has to be the smallest water block on the market today. There is no interference with any of the motherboard components because it is smaller than the CPU mount.

Installing the control card was just as simple. Because it doesn't need a PCI slot, it was installed in theng just above the AGP slot.

Attaching the power control cable is done at the power-on header of the motherboard.

The hoses were then routed through the grommets of the control card. The entire installation of components to the motherboard was completed in a matter of minutes and has to be one of the cleanest we have ever seen.

After installing the motherboard in the case, our attention went to hooking up the Hydrocool unit. Fittings were fixed to the hose and clamped with the provided hardware. These clamps are simply pressed over the hose with finger pressure and when connected, will swivel in place. Because they are self sealing when disconnected, this is where you would unhook the Hydrocool unit when moving it.

Filling the unit is done with the provided funnel, using half of the Hydrocool coolant followed by a top off of distilled water. Water is the only thing not furnished. Tap water is not an option.

Start-up

When we fired up, the system purged itself of air bubbles and warned us to add more coolant with an alarm and blinking "FILL" message on the front panel. Before we knew it, the installation was complete and ready to run.

Performance Testing

Properly testing PC liquid cooling components requires individual bench testing of each item. In this case we are looking at a complete cooling solution, so are interested in the overall performance only. We will look at how this system improved the cooling of our rig using Mother Board Monitor 5. Through the wonders of a good central heating and air system, we maintained a room temperature ranging from 68 to 69 degrees Fahrenheit during our tests.

Before installing the Hydrocool, we ran the same tests using an AX-7 Thermalright heatsink fit with an 80mm Enermax fan running at 2600RPM.

System Test Configurations
Processor:   AMD Athlon XP1700+
Motherboard:   Asus A7N8X BIOS Rev. 1004
RAM:   TwinX (2X) Corsair XMS3200 256MB 400Mhz DDR
Hard Drive:   Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM ATA100
Video Card:   VisionTek Ti4200 128MB
Video Drivers:   v44.03 Ti4200
Power Supply: Enermax 431W
Chipset Drivers:   nForce v2.41
Operating System:   Windows XP Professional SP1

Test
Air Cooled Hydrocooled Hydrocool Readout
Idle 43-44C 32-33C 26.5-28C
After three loops of Toast 49-50C 34.5-35.5C 29-30.5C
After three loops of 3DMark 2001SE 48-49C 34-35C 29-30C

From these simple tests we can see that Hydrocool performs quite well, giving us a temperature drop of at least ten degrees Celsius over the air cooled set-up it replaced. The results surprised us because although not quite as good, they were within a few degrees of results we got with a liquid cooled dual Athlon rig we covered here.
