The BIOS

The BIOS will certainly give the power user plenty of options to play with. There are a multitude of choices for memory timings and CPU settings. CPU Soft Menu III technology in the BIOS menu manages the CPU frequency, Vcore, multiplier, chipset & DDR voltage and AGP VDDQ voltage adjustment to aid your tweaking adventure.

For the overclocker, there is no need to get too excited about the thoughts of a 200MHz FSB setting with the KT400 chipset. The problem with such a setting is the fact there is no 1/6 FSB divider support with the KT400. Yes, the clock generator can say all day long that it is set to a 1/6 setting, but VIA has confirmed that the KT400 chipset does not support it. The KD7 does have settings for the FSB from 100MHz to 250MHz. Without a 1/6 divider though, successful speeds approaching 200MHz FSB, will be difficult.

There is also a rather interesting setting in the BIOS called "Enhance for Benchmark" found under the CPU Operating Speed section. Enabling this option increased the FSB by 1MHz. This certainly is rather misleading, as most users will not realize they are overclocking their system by changing this setting.

Configuration and Setup

After installing the board and booting up for the first time, I encountered something a little strange. I was required to go in the BIOS and change my CPU settings to "user defined", instead of the default CPU settings. Once I entered the setting, XP2000+ (133), everything went just fine.

When configuring and tweaking the KD7 for the first time, it became apparent the boot time was slower than normal. From the moment the power button is pressed, there is approximately ten seconds that elapses before the system actually begins to boot up.

A ceiling of 139MHz FSB was met while overclocking the KD7. This certainly is not a stellar showing. Taking into consideration that DDR333 timings are far below the maximum capabilities of the DDR433 memory, there should have been a better showing by the KD7.
