The Installation

The test rig had been running flawlessly for a week before we decided it was safe to install the liquid cooling system. John from Flashawk Computers in Sonora, California and I spent most of a Saturday installing everything. While John handled the computer components, I tackled making final changes to the case itself.

In the process we did a couple other routine things, blowing the whole system clean with compressed air and installing a NewQ Gold graphic equalizer. We also relocated the power supply to the computer side of the case. It was originally on the other side to keep it distanced from the monitors.

John carefully plotted out where every existing connection was made in a diagram. Trying to remember all that stuff just isn't his way.

John used Arctic Silver 3 on the water blocks and was surprised at how easily they mounted on the motherboard. Except for dropping one of the Northbridge block's nylon nuts on the floor, his work went flawlessly. If it weren't for my wife's good looking (yes, she is) we would have been in trouble. Ever try to find a little thing on matching carpet? Suppliers should really send extras when their products have little pieces. Hunting down a five cent nut is frustrating.

I went after the cooling side of the case with a Dremel tool. It involved cutting away much of the power supply cage and removing drive bay supports in the front to make room for the air shroud. I then mounted the floor, back door and all the other fixed equipment.

Some Details
The radiator front bracket was carved out of an aluminum angle with a Dremel tool and is fixed to the floor with through bolts. Thumbscrews are used to attach the radiator.

Small polished aluminum angles epoxied to the shroud are also through bolted to the floor.

Where the primary hose splits into two, standard ¼" brass NPT fittings are used with a barbed fitting and Innovatek fittings. It's amazing how nice these can be made to look after spending some time on the polishing wheel. The assembly is zip tied to a small aluminum bracket.

The pump is mounted to the back door with a ¼" thick rubber isolating pad to reduce vibration.

Oops…

It would be great to say everything went perfect, but it didn't.

When everything was assembled we turned on the pump. It worked!! We spent some time getting rid of the air bubbles and took a break to eat.

When we came back, there was water on the floor of the case. Oops. One of the fittings on the air trap was leaking. Apparently I used one of the "sloppy" reamed out compression nuts and the tubing had worked loose. After some panic and a quick decision to drain the system, we soon had it back together with the right fitting.

We ran distilled water and Water Wetter through the system before buttoning up the case and hooking up the monitors, printers and all that other stuff. It fired right up without a glitch and a few minutes later we were updating a few drivers and watching the Matrox Reef Demo.
