Using our simple sea website templates on our site you can buy website templates I was very excited when I received the card from FedEx. I wasted no time in getting the card installed in my machine and fired up. To be on the safe side, I uninstalled my previous video drivers, reset all the settings to default and cleaned all references to the old drivers out of the registry. Once that was done I shut down, swapped out my old card for the new one and booted up. Immediately I was concerned because the video came up very garbled looking. I had flashing squares all over my screen. I decided to keep going however and booted into windows. I decided to test out the Gainward video drivers, to see what I thought of them. After installation and a reboot, everything looked fine, since the garbled video went away. Feeling more confident about the card, I started running benchmarks. I'd only been running benchmarks for about 15 minutes when I noticed what could only be described as "sparklies" all over the screen, interfering with the 2D and 3D output of the card. I could barely even read text with this problem. To test fully, I uninstalled the Gainward drivers and installed the latest WHQL certified drivers from nVidia's site, the 28.32 drivers (current at the time of testing). I had the same problem with these drivers. Frustrated, I called my contact at Monarch, who told me that it sounded like a RAM problem. I was told to call Gainward and ask them about the issue. I called Gainward and got a gentleman with broken, barely understandable English. I explained the problem to him and was told that it was indeed a RAM problem and that the board would have to be replaced via RMA. After sending my card in, they would send out a replacement card. I explained to him that I worked for AthlonXP.com and was getting ready to review the card. I asked if there was any way to expedite the RMA process and I was told no, there was no way to speed things up. Once my card was received, they would overnight me a replacement card. I sent my card in and followed its progress back to Gainward via the tracking number. Instead of over-nighting me a replacement card, as I had been told, it was 2 days later when they shipped the card by 3-day delivery. So much for a quick replacement.
The reason I mention my woes with the card is to warn others who may want to purchase a Gainward card. After talking further with my contact at Monarch, it looks like Monarch has a very high RMA rate with Gainward's GeForce 4 cards. Worse, Gainward doesn't want to admit the problem to their vendors, so they aren't replacing batches with the bad memory. Instead, someone must buy the card and find out that it's bad, and then send it in to be replaced. The problem with this is that it costs extra $$ to send the card to them and it costs extra time in the delay to get a functioning card. When you look at the price of the card and think about whether or not you want a Gainward card, keep these facts in mind.
