Tyan's Thunder K7

And it seems like only yesterday...

By D. Ryba, 1/24/2002

Approximately six months ago, Tyan released the much heralded and enthusiastically anticipated, Thunder K7 mainboard. As AMD was the first to release a 1GHz processor, Tyan was the first manufacturer to release a dual processor motherboard based on the AMD platform. As many of the astute AMD bloc already knows, the Thunder K7 is based on Advanced Micro Devices' now mature 760MP chipset; specifically the 762 Northbridge and 766 Southbridge chipsets. Before the MPX commotion, the K7 Thunder was the biggest kid on the block. Preliminary examination suggests that the primary difference between AMD's 766 and 768 Southbridge chipsets is that the 768 Southbridge supports the 64-bit/66MHz PCI bus. Whereas, the K7 Thunder only supports the 64-bit/33MHz PCI bus. For those performance-seeking enthusiasts, this will remain the weakness of the 766 South chipset.

The initial launch of the K7 Thunder was controversial and some users experienced great difficulty configuring and running their rigs. Problems ranged from blown power supplies, black screens, to total system failure. The problems became so pervasive, that users started to turn to the less obvious such as the reseller, lot number, power supply, and manufacturer date. As with any innovative product, there are going to be bumps in the road. With these bumps, came revisions, with these revisions, evolved a stable platform worthy of any gaming fanatic or enterprise platform.

Above shows, some of the adaptations the early Thunder K7 went through. Few miscellaneous changes such as the addition of a passive heatsink on the 762 North chipset and other minor changes. Notice the chip vacancies near the center of the mainboards. This is where the Winbond W83782D hardware monitoring controllers would reside on the S2462UNGM model of the Thunder K7.

A close-up of AMD's 762 North chipset as found on the Thunder K7. Yes, this is the same chip found on the new MPX mainboards as first reviewed on AthlonXP.com. The AMD-762 system bus controller features support for the AMD Athlon MP/XP processor, up to 4 Gigabytes of PC2100 DDR memory, and AGP-4x graphics card support. It also features the now standard 266MHz bus, designed to provide up to a 33% (100MHz FSB or 200MHz FSB), increase in data throughput compared to existing AMD Athlon processor bus speeds. Includes two separate point-to-point system buses (FSB), DDR memory bus with Error Correction (ECC) support and incorporates 33MHz/32-bit/64-bit PCI support. The AMD-766 peripheral bus controller is an integrated circuit (IC), developed by AMD, to be the system Southbridge component of personal computer chipsets. The AMD-766 peripheral bus controller (the IC) connects to a host memory controller through the PCI bus.
