USB External Storage Review
External USB storage devices are very cool. Currently, there are a number of
devices on the market. The most interesting of these devices, to me, are the
smaller, more easily transportable devices. These devices are convenient; small,
fast, easy to carry. Best of all, most of them don’t need drivers installed
before being used, at least on systems with current operating systems like Win2K
and WinXP. The two products that we’re reviewing today are these types
of devices. They are very similar, but use different technologies and have different
benefits.
The first product is the TREK ThumbDrive SMART. Below are the specs.

Using our simple sea website templates on our site you can buy website templates ng the box, we find a CDROM with the drivers, for Win98/98SE and the drive
itself. The SMART in the product name refers to the fact that the product needs
no drivers installed (except for under Windows 98/98SE). Just plug the drive
into a USB port and it installs itself. Once the system recognizes it and installs
the internal windows driver, a new drive letter will show up that you can write
to and read from, just like any other drive. The TREK drive we were sent for
review is a 16MB version. TREK ThumbDrive SMART drives come in a variety of
storage sizes, from 8MB at the smallest to 512MB at the largest. The drive is
physically about the size of a pack of chewing gum, with a keyring on the cap.
The cap fits on the drive pretty tightly and didn’t seem to get any looser
no matter how many times I took the cap off. At first, I thought it would be
a bad idea to use this as it was intended, with keys on the keyring, but I never
had a problem during testing. I think it would be up to the individual user
if they’d want to use this feature or not. If the cap became loose, the
actual drive portion could fall off, leaving you with your keys and the cap,
but no data. The cap on the drive is nice, no matter what you think of the keyring,
since it provides protection for the USB connector.

The drive has an status LED on the side that lights up when it’s
connected to a computer, and flashes when transferring data. The light is actually
pretty hard to see, even in a fairly dark room. Only in my office at night,
with all the lights off could I see the indicator light clearly. At the bottom
of the drive, there’s a write protect switch. The switch is in a good
location, plus it’s recessed, so it needs to be engaged with a pen or
fingernail. That means there’s not much of a chance that it’ll be
engaged by accident. The switch is a handy feature if you want to make sure
you don’t overwrite any important data.
