Kunark was released in the spring of 2000 as an attempt to lure in new subscribers and reinstate the interest of current ones. An expansion to the original world it boasted a wide variety of new creatures and zones with stunning, detailed graphics that far surpassed that of Antonica. As I would imagine was the plan of it's creators, Kunarkd up new possibilities for adventurers and provided plenty of new space to travel and explore which helped to eliminate overcrowding. Packaged with it also came an extension in the level limit giving players the ability to reach a maximum level of 60. New methods of travel were added including portal spells for Druids and Wizards, and two boats for both good and evil aligned races.
The Lizardman Clan
A new scaly-skinned race was introduced with the release of Kunark known as the Iksar. Class options consisted of Shamans, Necromancers, Monks and Warriors.

Unfortunately, according to the history of the continent, this race captured the daughter of the High Elf king and eventually turned all races against them. Therefore all Iksar are KOS (Killed on Site) to all other races unless they are able to adjust their faction to be properly aligned with that of the city they visit. This can make having your lizardman (or lizardwoman) a little complicated at first. However Kunark is a fully functional continent in that theoretically, one can start a race there and carry them all of the way up to level 60 without ever needing to leave. Some of the benefits of the Iksar race include naturally being a Master at swimming and incredibly fast health regeneration.

The trees now swayed slightly from side to side in the wind whereas before you may hear a breeze but you never actually saw any signs of it. The bright, vivid colors and level of detail in both sound and graphics were dramatically more realistic. The design of the land had a somewhat jungle appearance to it. There's a great deal of tribal symbols and designs, lots of leafy, colorful vegetation and outdoor zones. The downside to this was that the lag too seemed to increase. There were a number of kinks that had to be worked out post release, some of which I attribute to the level extension. Verant was forced to apply new rules to old creatures and zones in Antonica to maintain a balance preventing the new high level 60's from being able to barge into any 50+ zone and take whatever they chose easily. There was quite a bit of server downtime at first and several patch updates. Still, with all of the changes integrated into EQ as a result of Kunark (new models, level extension, experience increases for full groups and certain locations, etc.), it could've been much worse. Hats off to Verant for making the transitions go as smoothly as they did.

While there were several new quests added for players of all levels with Kunark, one major plus included the introduction of Epic Quests. These quests were, and still are considered to be some of the most intense, complicated, and expensive quests to do in the game. Each class has it's own Epic Weapon which can be obtained upon completion of the quest. An Epic Weapon in EQ could be considered the equivelent to a suped-up version of the BFG in Quake (for those who are familiar), but a heck of a lot harder to obtain. It's the weapon of superiority specific to your class, and typically puts you in a place of awe by other members of your class if you carry it. However, it is impossible to complete these quests if you are below level 46 as each requires a trip to the Planes to kill a god, often multiple times. Therefore obtaining one of these can take on average weeks or even months.
It's a little warm here... let's move someplace cooler
Several folks thought Kunark would be Antonica with a few new features. I'd say it's quite the opposite. It's a completely new continent with creatures and visuals unlike anything the original EQ lands had ever seen. But, it was a little technically troubled and also began to get somewhat crowded. Before long, rumors began to spread of a new land covered in ice and snow and reigned by dragons, dwarves and giants... this troubled land was named Velious
